June 23, 2012 – The Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Public Safety Minister, and the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, today made the following statements to mark the twenty-seventh anniversary of the bombing of Air India Flight 182, and Canada's National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism. On June 23, 1985, 329 people, most of them Canadians, were killed by the cowardly bombing of Air India Flight 182. Two other victims were also lost at Japan's Narita Airport.

“This is a day to remember those around the world who have lost their lives to acts of terrorism, and to renew our resolve to protect our way of life and remain vigilant against these senseless acts,” said Minister Toews. “Last year, Prime Minister Harper announced the Kanishka Project, named after the Air India Flight 182 plane, which will produce research to increase our understanding of terrorism. We also recently released Canada's Counter-terrorism Strategy which sets out how the Government as a whole works to prevent, detect, deny and respond to the threat of terrorism. Preventing future acts of terrorism is the greatest tribute we can offer to these victims.”

“Our Government remains unwavering in its commitment to the safety and security of Canadians. On this, the 27th anniversary of the Air India tragedy and the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, we pause to remember all of those we have lost through acts of terror around the world,” said Minister Kenney. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the victims of the Air India tragedy and to all of those affected by terrorist attacks.”
