Haiti earthquake: Update
Further to Public Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-009 , on January 18, CBC reported that 11 Canadians have been confirmed dead and 859 are still unaccounted for in Haiti. The number of Canadians located is 1,433. Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon indicated that Canadians are still being evacuated from Port-au-Prince and the surrounding region, with 10 flights returning 947 evacuees to Canada since last week. Another flight with about 40 people is scheduled to arrive in Montréal on January 18 and about 20 Canadians remain at the Canadian Embassy. CBC also reported that on January 17, a group of B.C. students and their chaperones, who had been stranded about 50 kilometres outside Port-au-Prince, were on a flight back to Canada from Haiti, hours after being rescued by the Canadian military. They were expected to arrive in Montréal on January 18.
On January 17, National Defence and the Canadian Forces announced further support to Haiti. Minister of Defence Peter MacKay indicated that the Canadian Forces will have “approximately 2000 Canadian Forces personnel, seven helicopters and two ships contributing to rescue, recovery and reconstruction efforts in Haiti.”
The Government of Ontario announced that its chief forensic pathologist was to leave for Haiti on January 18 as part of a Canadian team that will help assess the personnel and resources required to identify victims of the earthquake. CBC reported the pathologist will lead a Canadian team and will work with the RCMP's forensic team to determine the resources that are required.

Minister of Foreign Affairs chairs conference call with Haitian Prime Minister to coordinate relief and recovery efforts
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada announced that on January 17, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon hosted a teleconference with Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Alain Le Roy, nine foreign ministers from the Group of Friends of Haiti and Secretary General of the Organization of American States José Miguel Insulza to strengthen the international community’s commitment to coordinate relief and recovery efforts in Haiti in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Minister Cannon stated that the teleconference was “critical to creating a greater understanding within the international community of the current needs identified by the Haitian government for humanitarian relief and to beginning a conversation on reconstruction.”

WHO confirms new cases of H1N1 flu virus: Update
Further to Public Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-006, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that as of January 10, more than 208 countries and overseas territories or communities have reported laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009, including over 13,554 deaths.

CFIA issues Health Hazard Alert for certain Compliments brand salad due to possible Listeria
On January 15, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a Health Hazard Alert warning the public not to consume certain Compliments brand Italian Blend salad mix because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This product has been distributed in Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. The importer, Sobeys Inc., Mississauga, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
