Haiti earthquake: Update
Further to Public Safety Canada Daily Infrastructure Report DIR10-021, as of 08:30 EST on February 2, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada indicated that 1,967 Canadians have been located; 102 Canadians are unaccounted for; 3,397 have been evacuated on 38 flights; and 26 have been confirmed dead.

USGS provides a map of the Haiti earthquake and aftershocks.
DFAIT provides more information on Canada’s response to the earthquake in Haiti, including assistance for Canadians in Haiti. DFAIT also provides more information on how the Government of Canada responds to natural disasters abroad.
National Defence and the Canadian Forces provides information on Operation HESTIA, which is the Canadian Forces participation in humanitarian operations conducted in response to the earthquake in Haiti.
The Canadian International Development Agency provides more information on how Canada is providing humanitarian assistance in response to the earthquake in Haiti.
Governments of Canada and New Brunswick invest $9.53 million in highways
On January 30, the governments of Canada and New Brunswick announced an investment of $9.53 million in seven highway improvement projects. The federal government is contributing $4.77 million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund and the province is contributing the same amount. The federal $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is a component of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The fund invests in construction-ready infrastructure projects that can be completed by March 31, 2011.

Governments of Canada and P.E.I. invest in renewable energy for farms
On January 30, the governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island announced a partnership to help farmers reduce energy costs through renewable fuel sources like solar, wind power and biomass. The total investment will be nearly $10 million. The program will also test P.E.I. crops that could be used as fuel, including fall rye and perennial grasses. It's the first of 40 steps the province outlined in its rural action plan last week. The federal investment totals $5.9 million, under the AgriFlexibility fund, which is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. P.E.I. is investing $2.8 million in the Renewable Energy Initiative and $1.2 million in the BioEconomy Crop Initiative, under the provincial government’s Rural Action Plan.

Government of Canada announces funding for projects in Newfoundland
The Telegram reported that on January 31, the Government of Canada announced funding of $13.8 million from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s Atlantic Innovation Fund for research and development projects in Newfoundland and Labrador. The funding includes an estimated $5.3 million for C-CORE, which is an integrity and security of critical infrastructure project. This project will combine three existing technologies to create a unique space-ground-subsurface method of monitoring critical infrastructure for structural stability and security. C-CORE will partner with the Memorial University of Newfoundland, University of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia Community College Centre for Geographic Sciences, Defence Research and Development Canada and the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment to advance satellite and associated technologies to monitor the integrity of Canada's critical infrastructure and provide predictive analysis. Another project, estimated to cost $2.4 million, has been designated to develop a unique net available power forecasting service that will provide forecasts of actual power supplied by a wind farm to the local energy grid.

Government of Canada makes financial contribution to children's health care website
On January 29, the Public Health Agency of Canada announced that the Government of Canada is contributing $4.5 million dollars over three years to AboutKidsHealth. Created and operated by The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, AboutKidsHealth website and resource centre seek to provide health care professionals, parents and children with comprehensive, authoritative and accessible information on children’s health. It will provide financial stability for AboutKidsHealth to build a national network of partners and better serve vulnerable populations such as rural, northern and aboriginal Canadians.

Air restrictions announced for Vancouver 2010 Winter Games
On January 29, Transport Canada announced that airspace restrictions will be in effect around the Vancouver International Airport and the Whistler Athletes’ Village from the opening of the Olympic Village on January 29 until the Paralympic Village closes on March 24. These airspace restrictions are part of the safety and security requirements for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and are described to pilots in Notices to Airmen that have been issued by NAV CANADA. Operations in some of the Olympic Restricted Areas will be limited to emergency and security aircraft only and special arrangements have been made for humanitarian and safety related flights to use the restricted airspace as required.

Governments of Canada and Quebec invest in infrastructure projects in Montréal
On February 1, the governments of Canada and Quebec announced their support for four green infrastructure projects in the Greater Montréal Region involving the construction of organic waste treatment systems. This support represents a total investment of nearly $559 million. The Government of Canada is contributing $150 million and the Government of Quebec is contributing $165 million, which is in addition to contributions made from the municipalities.
