January 12, 2011 — Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, and the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, congratulated the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) following the successful removal from Canada of Mohamed Mansaray. Mansaray is associated with the Winnipeg's “African Mafia” street gang and has 22 serious criminal convictions between 2004 and 2008 including assault, assault of a peace officer, and robbery.

“Once again, the outstanding cooperation of law enforcement has resulted in making our streets safer.  I commend the CBSA and Winnipeg Police Service on working to remove this serious repeat offender from our country,” said Minister Toews.  “I am pleased this serious convicted criminal will no longer pose a threat to the safety of Canadians and our communities.  We do not tolerate those who come to this country and commit serious crimes.”

Mohamed Mansaray was removed from Canada under escort by the CBSA to Sierra Leone on January 10, 2011.

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney added: “This is an example of the excellent and diligent work performed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and CBSA.  The removal of violent foreign criminals is key to maintaining the integrity of our immigration system and protecting Canadians.  Though the law gives individuals like Mr. Mansaray multiple avenues of appeal before they are removed, the government's position when before the courts is and will remain to consistently advocate for the safety and security of the Canadian public.”
