OTTAWA – February 7, 2013 – The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, this week carried out a pre-budget consultation with representatives of the Canadian Police Association.

“Our Government is committed to giving law enforcement the tools and resources they need to keep our streets and communities safe,” said Minister Toews. “During the Summit on the Economics of Policing in January 2013, we focused on three main themes, including efficiencies within police services, new models of community safety, and efficiencies within the justice system. These consultations provide an opportunity to expand on those discussions.”

“Our Association appreciates Minister Toews' efforts to include the views and experience of front-line law enforcement personnel when it comes to the important issue of ensuring that public safety is properly funded, and that taxpayers receive the best value possible for their investments in safer communities across Canada,” said CPA President Tom Stamatakis. “Today's meeting is a further opportunity for us to build on the momentum generated during the recent Economics of Policing Summit, and we look forward to continuing our productive partnership with the Government of Canada.”

“With over 900,000 net new jobs created since July 2009 – the best growth record among all G-7 countries – it is clear that our Government's plan is working,” added Minister Toews. “However, challenges remain in the global economy. That's why our Government is working hard to grow the economy and help create jobs, while keeping taxes low and returning to balanced budgets.”
