FREDERICTON, November 14, 2013 - Today the Harper Government announced interim payments totalling $10.2 million in federal funding under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA)  program for costs incurred by the Province of New Brunswick for events that occurred in 2010 and 2012.  The announcement was made by the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for New Brunswick and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, along with Mike Allen, Member of Parliament for Tobique-Mactaquac.

“The people of New Brunswick have endured the impacts of significant weather and flooding for a number of years,” said Minister Moore. “Our Government's DFAA program is making a significant contribution to help the province deal with expenses related to these storms.”

“We are committed to supporting Canadians and their communities in times of need,” said the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.  “This assistance to New Brunswick will offset some of the significant costs incurred in dealing with the aftermath of the disasters that struck in 2010 and 2012.”

“As the Member of Parliament for many local areas directly affected by the devastation from these floods, I know that these communities welcome the Government's strong support through these interim payments. I am pleased that our Government continues to stand with the people of New Brunswick to overcome these disasters” said Mike Allen, Member of Parliament for Tobique Mactaquac.

“It is important for governments to step up to help families and businesses get their lives back to normal when disaster hits,'' said New Brunswick Human Resources Minister Robert Trevors. “This funding from the federal government is an interim payment for monies the province spent in the days and weeks following three natural disasters to help New Brunswickers get back on their feet.''

In December of 2010 and in May of 2012, New Brunswick experienced storms and flooding that caused damage to public and private infrastructure including provincial bridges, highways and roads.

Since its inception in 1970, the DFAA has provided more than $2.5 billion in disaster financial assistance to the provinces and territories.

Following a large natural disaster, repair and reconstruction can take a significant time to complete and document. After the approval of federal financial assistance under the DFAA, provinces may request an advance, interim payment or final payment which requires the submission of the expenditure documentation for federal audit.  Once a review of the federal audit is completed, payment is issued.   For more information on the federal DFAA program and its guidelines, please visit our website: www.publicsafety.gc.ca.
