Description of Initiative:

In an effort to reduce purchase and fuel costs for unmarked vehicles, each year until 2020 the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) will replace 75 six-cylinder vehicles with four-cylinder models.

An agreement with the union led to a change of the contract allowing for an increase in kilometers to 200,000 km before a vehicle is pulled off the road.

This initiative was launched as a result of financial and environmental concerns (Government of Quebec’s plan to reduce GHGs by 2020).

Key Outcomes of the Initiative:

To date, 99 vehicles have been replaced by vehicles that are more energy efficient. Normally, vehicles are replaced after seven years or 200,000 km.

The data on the results of this initiative will be known in the second year of the project (2013).

We estimate savings of $2,172 per vehicle on the purchase price and savings of $4,160 for the purchase of fuel over the vehicle’s life span (200,000 km).
