Integration (Synopsis)

Nelson Police Department

Description: For ten years, the Nelson Police Department and Nelson Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Detachment have integrated and shared a number of services, including a detention facility; a BAC DataMaster (a breath alcohol measuring instrument); a police boat for water rescue and response; and training from subject matter experts on new legislation and provincial standards.
Objective: The objectives of this integration initiative are to realize efficiencies in cost and human resources for both the Nelson Police Department and the Nelson RCMP Detachment, and to benefit from information sharing.
Outcomes: The two police services realized cost efficiencies by integrating their independent facilities and equipment. There was an immediate 50% cost savings for each police service. The partner agencies also share maintenance and service costs.
Resources: The cost of setting up this arrangement was negligible. Resources were primarily focused on developing policies and shared funding formulas.
