Charging Fees for Police Services (Synopsis)

Sûreté du Québec

Description: The Sûreté du Québec provides select policing services that incur significant overtime costs. These services are not included in regulations governing the services that municipal police services and the Sûreté du Québec must provide, but they are included in other regulations. In 2006, the Sûreté du Québec began charging fees for some of these services to recover overtime costs. These services include police escorts of non-standard transportation vehicles, and monitoring and regulating traffic around provincial road infrastructure work.
Objective: This initiative seeks to preserve budgets and human resources allocated for police operations.
Outcomes: The Sûreté du Québec has charged $2,468,892 for police escorts of non-standard vehicles (which is the equivalent of 32,068 overtime hours) and $733,923 (10,909 overtime hours) for the monitoring of construction sites for fiscal year 2011-2012.
Resources: In the first three years of this initiative, police escorts for non-standard vehicles mobilized 15,162 hours of police work, and the monitoring of construction sites has mobilized 27,893 hours.
