The Ontario Working Group on Collaborative, Risk-Driven Community Safety (Synopsis)

Four Police Services—Greater Sudbury, Peel, Toronto and Waterloo

Description: The Ontario Working Group on Collaborative, Risk-Driven Community Safety (OWG) is a subcommittee of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Community Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. Formed in 2013, the OWG is a cooperative effort involving police services, provincial ministries, municipal governments and community agencies and partners. Its activities are supported by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (MCSCS).

The OWG develops and implements comprehensive, integrated interventions to reduce risk levels for individuals, families, groups and locations. These community-based collaborations and multi-sectoral partnerships are cost-efficient and have a positive impact on community safety. The OWG is currently working on several projects, including a prototype community safety planning framework and guidelines for inter-agency information sharing.
Objective: The OWG’s main objective is to improve community safety and well-being by addressing situations where the risk of victimization, crime or disorder is acute.
Outcomes: Multiple community agencies are involved through partnerships with various OWG members, and this list is expected to grow. A number of additional police services are developing and implementing this new approach in Ontario. The next step in the OWG’s work will likely be the development of a strategy to make its tools and approaches more widely accessible to all Ontario police services and their community partners.
Resources: The MCSCS funded the OWG in 2013 through the Proceeds of Crime Front Line Policing grant program. The theme for the 2013–2014 grant program was "Crime Prevention—Community Mobilization."
