Project Safe Keeping (Synopsis)

Royal Canadian Mounted Police—'H' Division

Description: Through Project Safe Keeping, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) ‘H’ Division is working to reduce the historic levels of violence faced by Aboriginal women. ‘H’ Division has a working relationship with the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association (NSNWA) and has supported and participated in several Sisters in Spirit educational awareness events throughout the province. The RCMP is working with the NSNWA's local community representatives to deliver a new toolkit called "I am not for sale.” The program seeks to create awareness and education around the human trafficking of Aboriginal women in First Nation communities. This program is being phased in through a collaborative approach with the NSNWA and the First Nation Chiefs and Councils.
Objective: By educating and creating awareness regarding the human trafficking of Aboriginal women in First Nation communities, Project Safe Keeping aims to improve trust, build relationships and ultimately reduce the level of violence in Aboriginal communities.
Outcomes: ‘H’ Division has delivered the toolkit to the Mi’kmaq School Board. The toolkit may be delivered in a school setting in the future.
Resources: There are no costs for RCMP involvement. The NSNWA incurred costs in setting up meetings with local Aboriginal leaders to help facilitate a discussion on human trafficking.
