Natural hazard risk assessment

Natural hazards can become disasters when they exceed or overwhelm a community's capacity to cope. The initiatives on this page identify and assess key natural hazard risks that can impact people living in Canada. Assessing natural hazards helps Canadians understand the risks they may face and supports preparation for, management of, and recovery from disasters.

Federally Identified Flood Risk Areas

The Federally Identified Flood Risk Areas (FIFRA) datasets help increase flood resilience across Canada by providing Canada-wide flood hazard information. These datasets supplement and complement other sources of flood hazard data, screen areas for further study and site-specific analysis, and help guide risk reduction efforts.

Community flood rating

Community flood ratings have been developed using the Community Risk Index (CRI). The CRI is a data product that visualizes and communicates community-level flood risk for all of Canada. The CRI helps with a general understanding and awareness of flood risk.

Task Force on Flood Insurance and Relocation

Findings from a task force that examined options for low-cost residential flood insurance and potential relocation for residents of high risk areas.

Disaster risk analysis and quantification

Quantitative hazard and risk assessment using the principles of engineering, science, big-data analysis, and mapping to enable evidence-based decision-making.
