Humanitarian Workforce Program
Emergencies in Canada are becoming more severe and complex. It's essential to have trained people ready to help when and where they are needed.
Funding from the Humanitarian Workforce program helps non-governmental organizations (NGOs) build and maintain response capacity so that trained emergency responders are ready during emergencies such as wildfires, floods, severe storms, and other disasters.
When provinces or territories request federal assistance, Humanitarian Workforce Program-supported organizations can be deployed quickly to provide on-the-ground support where local, provincial and/or territorial capacity is stretched. NGOs funded under the program can provide frontline support that helps protect people and support communities. This can include:
- Operating evacuation and reception centres
- Providing emergency shelter, food, and basic supplies
- Supporting evacuations and reunification of families
- Supporting search and rescue, first aid, and volunteer coordination
These services help reduce pressure on local responders and ensure affected individuals and families receive timely, compassionate support.
How the program works
The Humanitarian Workforce Program supports Canadian not-for-profits through two funding streams.
Stream 1: Capacity building
This stream helps NGOs recruit, train, equip and retain responders so they are prepared before emergencies happen.
Stream 2: Deployment activities
This stream funds the deployment of trained responders, services and equipment to deliver on-the-ground assistance to communities when federal assistance is requested by provinces or territories.
