The Government of Canada takes seriously its responsibility for the safety and security of Canadians detained abroad.
Government of Canada officials provided consular assistance to Mr. Abdelrazik over the course of his detention and throughout his stay at the Canadian Embassy in Sudan. Consular assistance included facilitating his access to legal counsel, arranging for medical examinations and dental care, and inquiring about psychiatric services.
Over the course of Mr. Abdelrazik’s detention, Government of Canada officials repeatedly conveyed expectations that Sudanese officials provide him with consular access, treat him humanely in accordance with international humanitarian standards, and provide due process.
The Government of Canada takes allegations of torture and mistreatment seriously.
Our submissions to the court provide further detail on our position.
