I am aware of reports that a Canadian citizen passed away last week in Türkiye and we are working with the Turkish government to get the facts and to better understand the circumstances behind these reports.
I understand that Global Affairs Canada’s Consular Officials are engaged as they usually are when there are reports of a Canadian death abroad and will provide support as appropriate in the circumstances.

Due to privacy concerns, I can’t comment on the specifics of this matter; however, the top priority of the Government of Canada is to protect the safety and security of Canadians both at home and abroad.
As a general matter, when the government learns that an extremist traveller seeks to return to Canada, a coordinated multi-departments/agencies approach is initiated to assess any safety considerations and national security concerns.
