Regulations Amending the Firearms Licenses Regulations
(Accounting for all firearms that enter the Canadian market)

Enabling Act

Firearms Act

Description

Amendments to the Firearms Licences Regulations would require that manufacturers and importers, prior to importation of a shipment or manufacture of any batch of firearms, share technical information about the makes and models with the Registrar of Firearms. This change is intended to enable the Canadian Firearms Program to assess firearms and update records prior to market entry.

Potential impacts on Canadians, including businesses

This regulatory change will codify practices that some businesses already follow, and which support the Canadian Firearms Program's ability to conduct technical assessments of firearms. This may introduce new administrative requirements for businesses that import or manufacture firearms, and while individual Canadians are unlikely to be directly affected, the proposal will contribute to improved oversight of firearms entering the Canadian market.

Consultations

Proposed regulations were published in the Canada Gazette, Part I on December 28, 2024 for public comments for a 45-day comment period.
